Badfinger, “Know One Knows,” from Wish You Were Here (Warner Bros., 1974)

If you don’t already know the clusterfuckedly star-crossed tale of the amazing Badfinger, I won’t bring you down by rehashing it here. I will just say that Wish You Were Here, the band’s second—and final—record for Warner Bros. after its four-album stint at Apple, is absolutely wonderful. And only remained on store shelves for six weeks before being recalled due to contract disputes with thieving, mob-connected manager Stan Polley, quite arguably the biggest douchebag of the 1970s music business. Which is saying a lot.

So anyway. Thanks to Stan, Badfinger soon fell apart and nobody really heard this album. (And then, of course, just Badfinger’s luck, a year later Pink Floyd put out a classic multiplatinum blockbuster with the same title.) But if you ever see a copy in the record store, grab it. It rules.
